After much hemming and hawing, I decided to just go ahead and just post something I’ve been working on. I feel like I spend a lot of time wondering if this is “right” or “good” or “done”… and I don’t know if any of those things are true – but I do know I need to do something, anything, instead of just thinking/worrying about it.  So here we go.  (I’ll try not to preface each project with this “disclaimer”!)

Anyway, awhile back I was sketching some faces — portraits seem to be my favorite these days, and I was drawn to really simple shapes and silhouettes – and how much emotion and expression you can convey without actually adding features.

I like the dark outlines (like in “abe” and “johnny”) — they look almost cartoon-ish? But I also like the subtleness of the pencil lines… so TBD. Even though these aren’t probably finished or perfect or anything, it feels so good to do something, to try something, to create!

Here are a few in progress or possibly done for now ideas I came up with: (click for larger image)

This is Abe.
